Shay Shumaker

I was born and raised in Alaska and my path towards becoming a structural engineer was sparked by a sixth grade project in which I built a scale model of the Esplanade de Riel, a pedestrian-only cable-stayed bridge spanning the Red River in Winnipeg, Manitoba. After spending a few years living in Toronto, Canada, I returned to Alaska in Fall 2025 and enrolled in the University of Alaska Anchorage's civil engineering program with an emphasis in structural design. I am on track to complete my degree in Spring 2028. 

I began as an intern of Devise in Spring 2026 and I have quickly become a key member of the structural engineering team. I support the team by making engineering calculation packages for clients, which lay the foundation for the mathematical analyses, design assumptions, and code checks required for structural engineering projects. In addition, I am proficient in the Building Information Modeling (BIM) software Autodesk Revit. I use Revit to create models for deck projects and to draw building design details as part of larger team efforts. Due to evolving codes and regulations, I also help Devise stay current by updating baseline spreadsheet programs, ensuring our firm's structural component calculations reflect the latest design codes.
